What BMI Really Tells You (And What It Doesn't)

Body Mass Index (BMI) is everywhere - but how useful is it really?
What BMI Is
BMI = Weight (kg) / Height (m)²
It was designed as a population-level screening tool to identify weight-related health risks.
What BMI Categories Mean
- Below 18.5: Underweight
- 18.5-24.9: Normal weight
- 25.0-29.9: Overweight
- 30.0+: Obese
What BMI Does Tell You
✅ Basic weight category relative to height
✅ Population-level health risk indicator
✅ Starting point for health discussion
✅ Trend over time (your BMI changing)
What BMI Does NOT Tell You
❌ Body composition: A 180 lb person could be muscular or have excess fat
❌ Fat distribution: Belly fat is more dangerous than hip fat
❌ Fitness level: You can have normal BMI and be unhealthy
❌ Age adjustments: Same BMI may mean different things at 25 vs 65
❌ Ethnic variations: Risk levels differ across populations
When BMI Is Misleading
- Athletes with high muscle mass (may show "overweight")
- Elderly with muscle loss (may show "normal" but be metabolically unhealthy)
- Very short or very tall individuals
Better Measures to Consider
- Waist circumference: More predictive of metabolic risk
- Waist-to-hip ratio: Indicates fat distribution
- Body fat percentage: (if measurable) More accurate than BMI
- Metabolic markers: Blood sugar, cholesterol, blood pressure
Use BMI as one data point, not the whole picture.
