Who Qualifies for Medicare?

Medicare is the federal health insurance program for people who meet certain eligibility criteria:

Age-Based Eligibility

  • U.S. citizens or permanent residents aged 65 or older
  • Must have worked at least 10 years (40 credits) paying Medicare taxes for premium-free Part A

Disability-Based Eligibility

  • People under 65 receiving Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) for 24 months
  • People with ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease) - eligible immediately
  • People with End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) - eligible after 3 months of dialysis

Important Enrollment Periods

  • Initial Enrollment Period (IEP): 7 months around your 65th birthday
  • General Enrollment Period: January 1 - March 31 each year
  • Open Enrollment: October 15 - December 7 (for plan changes)
