Common Mistakes People Make While Tracking BP

Blood pressure can vary by 20-30 mmHg based on technique alone. Here's how to avoid common errors.
Measurement Errors
Wrong Cuff Size
- Too small = falsely high readings (10-40 mmHg higher!)
- Measure arm circumference and use correct cuff
Poor Arm Position
- Arm should be supported at heart level
- Unsupported arm = 10 mmHg higher reading
- Arm below heart = 3-4 mmHg higher
Crossed Legs
- Crossing legs raises BP 2-8 mmHg
- Sit with feet flat on floor
Full Bladder
- Can raise BP 10-15 mmHg
- Empty bladder before measuring
Talking During Measurement
- Speaking raises BP 10-15 mmHg
- Stay quiet until reading is complete
Timing Errors
Testing After Activity
- Wait 5 minutes of quiet rest before measuring
- No caffeine within 30 minutes
- No exercise within 30 minutes
Testing Inconsistently
- Same time daily gives comparable readings
- Morning readings are typically most important
Recording Errors
Taking Only One Reading
- Take 2-3 readings, 1-2 minutes apart
- Record the average
- Discard the first if significantly different
Not Noting Context
- Record arm used, position, time
- Note if caffeine/medication/stress
Proper technique = accurate readings = better treatment decisions.
