Accurate blood sugar readings are essential for diabetes management. Here's how to get the most reliable results.
Preparing to Test
Wash Your Hands
Residue on fingers (especially from food) can falsely elevate readings. Use warm water and soap, dry thoroughly.
Avoid Certain Preparations
- Don't use alcohol wipes (can dry skin and affect readings)
- Don't squeeze finger too hard during testing
- Use fresh lancets for each test
Proper Testing Technique
- Insert test strip into meter
- Lance the side of fingertip (less painful than tip)
- Let blood form naturally - don't squeeze
- Touch strip to blood drop (not the other way around)
- Wait for reading - don't remove strip early
When to Test
Standard Testing Times
- Fasting: First thing in morning, before eating
- Pre-meal: Just before eating
- Post-meal: 2 hours after first bite
Strategic Testing
- Test when you feel symptoms of high/low
- Before and after exercise
- When trying new foods
- When sick or stressed
Recording Your Results
For each reading, note:
- Time
- Whether fasting, pre-meal, or post-meal
- What you ate (if post-meal)
- Any relevant notes (stress, illness, activity)
Common Mistakes
- Testing with wet hands (dilutes blood)
- Reusing lancets (duller = less accurate)
- Testing from same finger repeatedly
- Not washing hands before testing
- Using expired test strips
Track consistently at similar times for best insights.
