Looking at individual readings is like reading single words instead of sentences. Here's how to read the full story.
Calculating Weekly Averages
Instead of looking at each reading:
- Add all readings for the week
- Divide by number of readings
- Compare this week's average to last week's
Example: Blood sugar readings of 128, 142, 135, 138, 140, 131, 144 = Average of 137
Identifying Direction
Upward Trend
- Weekly average is higher than last week
- AND higher than two weeks ago
- Needs attention
Downward Trend
- Weekly average is lower than last week
- Usually positive (unless too low)
Stable
- Weekly average within 5-10% of previous weeks
- Usually the goal for chronic conditions
Reading Time-of-Day Patterns
Compare similar readings:
- All fasting readings together
- All post-dinner readings together
- Morning BP vs evening BP
Don't compare: Morning fasting to post-meal readings
Spotting Correlations
Look for patterns like:
- Higher after certain foods
- Better on exercise days
- Worse during high-stress periods
- Weekly rhythms (weekday vs weekend)
